It’s a lot like Robert M. Pirsig, the author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance said, “Although motorcycle riding is romantic, motorcycle maintenance is purely classic.” Same goes for skateboarding. You can’t skate without the skateboard and the skateboard has got to be right. There comes a time, when you’ve got to change your skateboard bushings. Check out the bushings at Skate Warehouse for the best selection online.
When Should I Change My Skateboard Bushings?
A while back we did a video where our guy Griff walked you through the steps of how to change bushings. But before you learn how to change your bushings, it’s important to know when you should change your bushings. When is it time? How can you tell?
The simple answer is change your bushings when the bushings crack. How long a bushing lasts before cracking depends on how often you skate and how tight you ride your trucks. The tighter you ride your trucks the harder you want your bushings to be.
How To Change Your Skateboard Bushings
Step 1: First remove the kingpin nut with your skate tool and set it aside so you don’t lose it. Then remove your bushing washer and set that aside as well.
Step 2: Pull the hanger out.
Step 3: Remove everything on the baseplate until just the kingpin remains. That means remove the top bushing and bottom bushing.
Step 4: Take out your new bushings (Griff uses Bones Hardcores) and make sure to separate your top and bottom bushings. With Bones bushings you do not need the bottom bushing washer, which is why Griff removed his.
Step 5: Slide the bottom bushing onto the kingpin.
Step 6: Put on your hanger.
Step 7: Add the top bushing onto the kingpin.
Step 8: Put on the washer and tighten on the kingpin nut. Tighten with Unit Tool.
Step 9: Adjust trucks to where you like them.
