During our recent excursion to Santa Cruz we got an inside look at the NHS Research & Development Lab led by none other than head skate scientist Tim Piumarta. If you haven’t seen or read Part 1 of this article, be sure to go back and check that out! Watch, read and learn how hardgoods are rigorously tested for Santa Cruz, Flip, Creature, Ricta, Independent, MOB Grip, Krux, OJ and the rest of the NHS brand family.
They say that if you can measure it, you can improve it – and these guys measure everything. The NHS research & development department is responsible for the engineering side of wheels, decks, trucks, accessories, griptape, etc. Tim Piumarta and his crew put the “good” in hardgoods for the NHS family of brands, including Santa Cruz, Flip, Creature, Ricta, Independent, MOB Grip, Krux, OJ and more. Watch the video or read more and edu-skate yourself!
You kids out there may not know the name but Richard Novak (and his partners Jay Shuirman and Doug Haut) literally created the skate industry that we know and love today. If it wasn’t for these guys pouring their blood, sweat and tears into the early days of 1970s-80s skateboarding—you might be holding a scooter right now. Inside of Rich’s brain is 40+ years of skateboarding’s entire history—take a peak behind the curtain and watch the interview!
We had the chance to sit down with Emmanuel Guzman for a quick list of questions. We talked Santa Cruz Skateboards history, new upcoming board graphics and what it’s like to go from Local to Am to Pro in your own hometown. Check it out!
We recently drove up to Santa Cruz, CA for a full tour of the NHS Distribution facility. This video is the first section of that tour, featuring longtime NHS graphics master Dave Freil. Dave demonstrated much of the printing process for skate graphics and talked about the evolution from original hand-printed screening to contemporary heat transfers and more. If you’re into skate art culture, this video will stoke you out!
Skate Warehouse took a trip to Santa Cruz, California to spend a day at the NHS Fun Factory, home to brands like Independent Trucks, Creature, Santa Cruz, Ricta, OJ Wheels and many more. We got a full tour of the warehouse and NHS skate museum, we watched mad skate scientists in the R&D lab, we saw tons of vintage product from years past and we even got a sit down interview with Jason Jesse and Emmanuel Guzman. It was a really good day.
