It’s heartbreaking and powerful. It bums you out and pumps you up. The video below, Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul is raw and epic, depicting what skateboarding really means in the world at large. An escape, a sanctuary, a pastime, and an identity, skateboarding is a little bit of everything to these boys and girls. Made possible through a group called NGO Skateistan, the video pairs with a new book nearing release titled Skateistan: The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan, containing photographs, essays, interviews, and personal stories from Oliver Percovich, Skateistan’s founder and Afghan youths effected by skating. This project is about ‘Skateistan’, and how a grassroots skateboarding project has impacted the lives of kids living in a war-torn community.
