How to Choose The Best Skateboard Wheel Size

By Skate Warehouse |

Wheel size is important. It can affect your skating in many different ways. The weight of your setup, the speed and the style of skating you’ll be doing all depends on what kind of wheels you have. Generally, wheels run from around 48 millimeters to 75 millimeters and are measured by their diameter. Lower millimeter wheels are more for street skating and higher millimeter wheels are more for cruising around.

What Wheel Size Is Best For Me?

Wheels For Street Skating

Wheels that are 54mm and under are usually best for street skating. Smaller wheels are ideally used for street skating because they’re light weight makes flipping your board a bit easier. If you’re looking to set up a street board or just continue skating street this is a perfect size wheel for you.

Wheels For Transition and Rough Terrain

Moving up to the 55mm to 58mm range. Generally, wheels in this group are used for transition skating and going over rough terrain because their bigger size helps you go faster when skating transition and go over rough ground easier. While wheels in this group are bigger, they can still be used to skate street. It will be more difficult to flip the board because of the added weight but you’re still able to do both. If you’re looking for a good all terrain wheel, you’ll want to look at wheels from the 55mm to 58mm size range.

Cruiser Wheels

If you’re just looking to go fast and stick to strictly cruising. You’ll want to find wheels in the 60mm and above range. Most of the time 60mm wheels are used on “cruiser boards” for just pushing around because they provide a much smoother ride and are able to ride over cracks and bumps easier. Flip tricks will be more difficult with these wheels due to their size and weight but the bigger size provides more surface area to help you go faster. If you’re trying to get around with ease or set up a cruiser, you’ll want to check out wheels from this group.
